Our service here at Redeemer is both informed by and conformed to the Word of God, and is carefully shaped to lead us in a dialog with our Creator and Redeemer. It is a dialog in which God speaks to His people through His Word and ordinances, and we respond in our prayer, confession, and singing. This means that when we gather it is not just a looking to the Lord on His day—but also interacting and engaging with Him.
"The elements of religious worship of God include reading the Scriptures, preaching and hearing the Word of God, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord, as well as the administration of baptism and the Lord’s supper." — [2LBC, ch. 22, para. 5a]
The service begins with the Triune God calling us with His Word to worship Him with reverence and awe. A text, often a Psalm, is read by an elder as a call to the people of God.
We respond by lifting up our voices to Him and singing. As we are commanded, “Come into his presence with singing!” (Ps. 100:2).
During this time one of our elders will pray on behalf of the believers and for the believers. This is a time of confession, intercession, and thanksgiving before God. We believe elders are to model a life of prayer so this time is led by an elder before the whole church, both for their care and edification.
God continues to speak as His Word is exposited and proclaimed faithfully (Titus 2:1, 2 Tim 4:2-4). A pastor or faithful brother (invited by the elders) gives an exposition of the Scriptures, which ultimately calls us to repentance of sin, faith in Christ and further obedience in relationship to Him.
In sharing the Lord’s Supper (communion) each week, we partake together to commune with and participate in the body and blood of Christ (1 Cor. 10:16, 11:23-26). This is where we remember that in meeting Christ at the table, He offers us Himself. When there are water baptisms we celebrate with those immersed as they are buried with Christ in death and alive in Him through faith and newness of life (Rom. 6:4).
Having heard the Word of Christ, we “let the word of Christ dwell in [us] richly,” by “singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thanksgiving in our hearts to God” (Col 3:16).
In our time of worship, the triune God gets the first word and the final word—and both are announcements of His grace. An elder blesses the people of God from the Word of God, which is available to all who receive it through faith (2 Cor. 13:14).
In a box (located at our info table) we return to God our tithes and offerings (1 Cor. 16:1-2). This is something we do with joy, not out of compulsion (2 Cor. 9:7). We do this sacrificially and faithfully to care and provide for the ministries of the local church body (2 Cor. 8:1-15).
